The Need for Continuous Wastewater Monitoring
Wastewater discharge and treatment operations generate changing process conditions that are difficult to assess through occasional manual inspections alone. Intermittent manual monitoring has limitations, including low time coverage and samples that may not fully represent changing discharge conditions. A remote monitoring system can help operators obtain more continuous visibility into treatment-site operation and wastewater-related measurements.
Solution Overview
The solution uses industrial-grade 4G wireless routers to help connect geographically distributed wastewater treatment plants with a remote monitoring and management system. Production and operating data from different plants and stations can be collected automatically, stored and managed centrally. Operations personnel can use a client application to monitor each site remotely and query operating data.
At monitoring points, sensors and dedicated instruments collect physical and chemical parameters associated with wastewater treatment. Data is transferred from the monitoring instruments to a remote monitoring centre, where it can be consolidated, organized and analysed. The system also supports the monitoring information being forwarded to environmental protection authorities for supervisory management.
System Architecture
The architecture below shows the field-to-centre data path. It shows process sensors and equipment at the wastewater treatment site, an industrial 4G router, the cellular network and the remote monitoring and supervision centre.
Field Monitoring and Data Acquisition
Monitoring covers physical and chemical parameters associated with wastewater treatment, including:
- Wastewater equipment operating conditions
- Industrial wastewater discharge flow
- Wastewater pH value
- Relative turbidity
The monitoring points use sensors and dedicated instruments. In this design, data is sent from the communication ports of monitoring instruments to the remote monitoring centre. Select the instrument interface and communication protocol for the connected equipment.
Industrial 4G Router Connectivity
An industrial-grade 4G wireless router provides the wide-area communication link between distributed wastewater treatment sites and the remote monitoring system. The reference architecture shows the router connecting the treatment-site environment to a 4G / 3G / GPRS cellular network and onward to the monitoring centre.
Industrial router connectivity supports unattended sites and remote management of environmental monitoring equipment. Confirm operating conditions and hardware configuration for each location.
Remote Monitoring and Centralized Management
Operating data from multiple wastewater treatment plants and stations is transmitted to a central monitoring centre. The centre consolidates, organizes and analyses the incoming information, allowing operating personnel to review site conditions and query historical operating data.
Monitoring information can be forwarded to environmental protection authorities for discharge supervision. Define platform functions, user access and integration requirements for each project.
Application Value
- Improve monitoring continuity compared with occasional manual sampling and inspection.
- Connect geographically distributed wastewater treatment plants to a centralized monitoring environment.
- Support collection and centralized storage of production and operating data.
- Enable remote review of wastewater flow, pH, turbidity and equipment operating conditions.
- Support data consolidation and analysis for operational management and environmental supervision.
- Reduce the need for routine on-site visits where remote data access is sufficient.
Remote monitoring supports operational visibility and supervisory workflows. It does not replace statutory sampling, laboratory analysis, regulatory reporting obligations or on-site inspections required by applicable environmental regulations.
