Coastal & Flood Embankment Monitoring and Early Warning

A remote monitoring approach for seawalls and flood embankments, combining field measurements, wireless data transmission and centralized monitoring.

The Monitoring Challenge

Coastal and river embankments protect communities, infrastructure and economic activity. Typhoons and heavy rainfall can increase the risk of embankment damage. Manual observation and on-site patrols are labour-intensive and can be difficult to maintain consistently during severe weather and flood seasons.

A monitoring system brings field measurements and site images into a central view, helping operators follow changing conditions, review historical data and identify abnormal readings for further assessment.

What the System Monitors

The monitoring arrangement can collect data from selected field instruments and monitoring points, including:

  • Displacement and deformation
  • Crack conditions
  • Water level and rainfall
  • Soil moisture, where configured
  • Field images or video
  • Monitoring-device voltage and ambient temperature

System Overview

The system consists of field monitoring stations, a data communication network and a monitoring center with an embankment monitoring and early-warning platform. Field measurements are transmitted to the platform for display, storage, analysis and alert handling.

Field Monitoring Stations

Monitoring stations use instruments such as displacement sensors, crack sensors, water-level sensors and cameras. The system description also includes rainfall, soil-moisture and equipment-status data.

Data Acquisition and Communication

A CAIMORE remote telemetry unit (RTU) connects field monitoring equipment with the monitoring platform. The CM550 series is described as a wireless RTU family for data acquisition, remote control and wireless communication. The listed capabilities include analog signal acquisition, digital inputs and outputs, pulse counting, Ethernet, serial communication and RS485.

The RTU transmits field data over a cellular or public communication network to the monitoring center. The selected device configuration and local network conditions determine the available connectivity options.

Monitoring Center and Platform

The monitoring center provides a centralized view of monitoring points and incoming data. Platform functions include:

  • Monitoring-point information and network status management
  • Real-time collection and storage of water-level, rainfall, displacement and other configured measurements
  • GIS-based location and operating-status display for monitoring devices
  • Historical data queries, trend charts and period-to-period comparisons
  • Automatic alerts to designated personnel when configured monitoring values are abnormal

Information can be made available through web and mobile interfaces, with SMS notifications described as an alert channel.

Operational Benefits

  • Centralized visibility of distributed embankment monitoring points
  • More continuous observation of selected measurements
  • Historical data review and trend analysis
  • Location-based device status monitoring
  • Timely alerts to support operational assessment and response

The monitoring system supports engineering assessment and operational decision-making. It complements, rather than replaces, on-site inspection and established emergency procedures.
