Reservoir Safety Monitoring
Reservoirs and dams require ongoing observation of hydrological conditions and operating status. Monitoring uses sensor technologies, communication networks and computer systems to collect information on dam deformation, seepage, stress, hydrology and meteorological conditions. Remote terminal units (RTUs) acquire signals from field sensors, perform local preprocessing and storage, and transmit relevant parameters to an information centre.
At the monitoring centre, incoming data can be processed, compiled, analysed and reviewed for warning purposes. Video monitoring also provides visual information about reservoir, river-channel and sluice-gate conditions to support operational assessment.
System Objectives
- Collect water-level and local rainfall measurements at distributed monitoring points.
- Provide image capture and video visibility of selected field locations.
- Transmit field information to a central monitoring centre for storage, processing and analysis.
- Support warning when water level or rainfall exceeds configured thresholds.
- Enable multi-centre and multi-level monitoring by reservoir management centres and relevant water authorities.
Solution Overview
The system has three main parts: front-end data acquisition, wireless data transmission and central data monitoring. Field stations combine water-level, rainfall and image-monitoring functions. Remote telemetry equipment collects and forwards field information through a mobile communication network to the central platform.
This 2016 design uses CM3161 for wireless data transmission and includes CM5191 RTU and CM3161 DTU equipment references. Confirm current availability and network compatibility with CAIMORE.
System Architecture
The English reference architecture below translates the original network expansion diagram. It retains the field monitoring stations, CM5191 RTU / CM3161 DTU roles, historical mobile-network transmission, reservoir management centre, municipal/county monitoring centres and warning functions.
Field Data Acquisition
The system includes front-end acquisition of river or reservoir water level, local rainfall and captured images. Monitoring points can be configured as integrated stations combining water-level, rainfall and image functions.
Wireless Data Transmission
This 2016 design uses a mobile data network as the core communication method. It identifies GPRS, CDMA and 3G as historical network options and states that the RTU product in that solution had an integrated GPRS communication module. In this design, additional mobile communication functions required additional equipment.
These network references are historical. They must not be interpreted as confirmation that the legacy devices support current LTE, 4G or 5G networks, or that the service remains available in a target country.
Central Monitoring Platform
The system includes a central platform comprising data servers, application servers and a monitoring display. The platform stores, calculates, analyses and monitors incoming field data, including rainfall information, water-level readings and images.
Multi-Centre Monitoring and System Functions
- Multi-centre, multi-level monitoring, allowing reservoir monitoring centres and municipal or county water authorities to view monitoring information.
- Remote monitoring of reservoir water level, rainfall and video data.
- Real-time video monitoring and image capture.
- Automatic alarms when configured warning water levels or rainfall thresholds are exceeded.
- SMS notifications for warning events.
- Automatic generation of water-level and rainfall reports for historical review and analysis.
CAIMORE Equipment References
CM5191 RTU and CM3161 DTU are equipment references from this 2016 design. Confirm current availability and network compatibility before selecting hardware.
Operational Value
- Improve visibility into reservoir water levels, rainfall and selected site conditions.
- Bring field information into a centralized monitoring environment.
- Support historical data review through reports and analysis.
- Provide threshold-based alerts and SMS notification for abnormal hydrological conditions.
- Enable information sharing across reservoir and local water-authority monitoring centres.
Monitoring systems support operational awareness and decision-making. They do not replace engineering inspections, dam-safety assessments, emergency planning or the judgement of responsible authorities.
