Managing Distributed Water Information
Water management operations often involve monitoring points spread across wide geographic areas. Measurements, equipment status and operational records may be held in separate systems, making it difficult for teams to obtain a consistent view of water conditions and share information across departments.
CAIMORE's smart water management approach combines field data acquisition, wireless RTU connectivity and an integrated monitoring platform. It brings data from distributed water-source monitoring points into a shared operational environment for monitoring, analysis and coordinated management.
Typical Information Management Challenges
- Monitoring data is distributed across different systems and locations.
- Data quality and consistency can vary, affecting accuracy, completeness and timeliness.
- Disconnected systems make information sharing difficult.
- Operational data is not always organized for trend analysis or decision support.
- Integrating existing systems, networks and data resources can require substantial coordination.
Solution Overview
The solution is organized around distributed monitoring points and a central monitoring center. Data acquisition terminals collect water-related measurements such as water level, pressure and flow. Wireless RTUs provide the field communication link to the monitoring platform, where information can be brought together for operational review and analysis.
The platform follows a three-layer IoT structure: sensing, network and business. An integration platform combines data and business functions, while supported control commands can be used for remote operation of connected terminal equipment.
System Architecture
The architecture connects distributed field monitoring points to a central platform through RTU-based data acquisition and wireless/IP communication. Video monitoring can also be integrated to provide visibility into field conditions.
Field Data Acquisition and Wireless Connectivity
Distributed monitoring points can collect water level, pressure and flow measurements. The RTU acts as a remote data acquisition and communication terminal, connecting field signals with the network and monitoring platform. Wireless 4G/5G connectivity is selected according to the RTU variant, project requirements and local network availability.
The RTU product family offers configurable I/O and communication options. Depending on the selected model, available options may include analog or digital inputs, counter inputs, digital or relay outputs, PWM outputs, RS232/RS485, and optional interfaces such as TTL, RS422, USB, Ethernet, Zigbee or GPS. The RTU series supports TCP/IP and standard Modbus communication, with available functions determined by the selected model and integration requirements.
Integrated Water Management Platform
The monitoring platform brings field information and existing water-management data into a common operational view, with functions including:
- Data aggregation and integration across monitoring points and existing information systems.
- Monitoring of water level, flow and other configured water-related measurements.
- Map- and chart-based presentation of monitoring information.
- Historical data queries and trend analysis.
- Video access for reviewing field conditions.
- Alarm and notification functions for abnormal readings.
- Remote control of connected terminal equipment where configured.
- User and data permission management.
Data Integration and Deployment
Assess existing resources: Review current systems, data sources, networks, computing facilities and storage resources.
Establish data standards: Define data catalogues and common data standards for the information to be managed.
Integrate data resources: Organize existing data, identify information to be shared and establish the required data-transfer paths.
Build platform services: Provide data aggregation, updates, exchange and analysis functions to support operational applications.
Enable data services: Expose relevant data-service interfaces for thematic applications and other business systems.
