Unattended Pump Station Remote Monitoring and Control System

An integrated CAIMORE solution for unattended or lightly staffed pump stations, combining pump monitoring, video surveillance, security alarms, access control, environmental monitoring and 4G / 5G connectivity.

Application Overview

Pump-station application image.

Pump stations provide the pressure and energy needed to move water when gravity flow alone is not sufficient. They are widely used in water supply, drainage, flood control, irrigation and industrial water systems. Because many pump stations are distributed across remote locations, operators need a practical way to monitor equipment status, site security and operating conditions without relying on continuous on-site staffing.

CAIMORE's unattended pump station monitoring solution integrates local control and remote supervision into one coordinated system. The solution helps operators view field conditions in real time, manage alarms centrally and support remote operation across multiple sites.

Operational Challenges

  • Remote and dispersed pump stations are difficult to inspect and supervise from a central location, especially where communication resources are limited.
  • Continuous manual guarding increases staffing pressure and can still delay issue detection and follow-up.
  • Conventional video surveillance alone cannot provide unified pump-equipment monitoring, alarm handling and operational control.
  • Separate video, perimeter alarm and power / environmental monitoring systems increase maintenance effort and reduce management efficiency.
  • When an incident occurs, technical personnel need timely video and equipment information to support diagnosis and response.
  • Wired communication deployment can be difficult and expensive for some pump-station projects.

Solution Overview

CAIMORE's water-industry unattended monitoring solution uses a local unattended workstation and integrated monitoring devices at each pump station, together with a centralized monitoring centre. At the site level, the system can bring together pump-equipment monitoring, video surveillance, perimeter security, fire alarms, access control, lighting control, voice intercom and power / environmental monitoring.

At the management level, the monitoring centre can support alarm handling, data analysis, remote management and centralized storage. Depending on site conditions, communication can be implemented through wired transmission or wireless 3G / 4G / 5G connectivity.

System Architecture

The architecture below presents the pump-station monitoring structure in English. It shows two local monitoring zones, sensor and security inputs, local controllers, CAIMORE CM550 devices, the wireless communication network and the remote monitoring centre.

Local Monitoring at Each Pump Station

The local pump-station system can be organized into multiple monitoring zones. At each site, the unattended workstation and associated field devices coordinate several subsystems:

  • Pump and process equipment monitoring.
  • Video surveillance of the pump station and surrounding areas.
  • Perimeter intrusion alarms.
  • Fire and smoke alarm systems.
  • Access control and attendance management.
  • Lighting control and audible alarm / voice intercom.
  • Power and environmental monitoring for pump-room operating conditions.

Pump and Process Monitoring

The solution supports monitoring of water-tank level or inlet pressure, outlet pressure and outlet flow. It also monitors pump-group operating status, current, voltage, protection status and operating mode.

Remote switching of pump-control modes and remote start / stop operation can be implemented through the monitoring system. Manual, automatic and remote control modes can be configured according to project requirements.

Security, Video and Alarm Linkage

The integrated security functions include live video viewing of pump-station work areas, perimeter intrusion detection, fire alarms, access control and lighting control. When an alarm condition occurs, linked responses can be configured, such as switching on lights, triggering audible alerts, sending SMS or MMS notifications and uploading alarm information to the management centre.

Video and voice intercom functions can also help technical personnel communicate with field staff and support remote troubleshooting.

Typical Monitoring and Alarm Conditions

  • Overcurrent or abnormal current / voltage.
  • Water-level thresholds exceeded or water level too low.
  • Equipment protection or control-cabinet faults.
  • Distribution-room faults.
  • Unauthorized entry or perimeter intrusion.
  • Fire, smoke or pump-room environmental alarms.

Communication Network

The solution can be implemented with both wired and wireless communication methods. Typical options include fibre, local-area network connections, 4G, 3G / 5G mobile networks and short-message communication. The communication method can be selected according to site conditions and the distance between the pump stations and the monitoring centre.

The system uses a standard TCP/IP communication architecture for network transmission and can support browser-based or networked supervisory access within the project configuration.

Remote Monitoring Centre

The remote monitoring centre provides centralized supervision across multiple pump stations. Core functions include alarm handling, reporting and analysis, remote management and centralized storage. Through the network structure, authorized personnel at different levels can review pump-station operation and alarm conditions remotely.

CAIMORE CM550 at the Edge

In the original application architecture, CAIMORE CM550 devices are used at the pump-station edge to support data collection and remote communication within the project structure shown.

System Functions

  • Monitor water-tank level or inlet pressure, outlet pressure and outlet flow.
  • Monitor pump start / stop status, operating current, voltage, electrical energy, protection status and operating mode.
  • Collect distribution-room switch status and electrical energy information.
  • View pump-station panoramas, electrical rooms and other important locations by video where the communication configuration supports it.
  • Support manual, automatic and remote pump start / stop control, with selectable operating modes.
  • Select pumps for operation according to supply pressure and pump running time, according to project strategy.
  • Report abnormal current, phase loss, high / low water level, control-cabinet protection, distribution-room faults and unauthorized entry.
  • Store, display and query monitoring data, control information, alarm records and operation records.
  • Support multiple video channels and local or remote maintenance of monitoring and control equipment.

Local Resilience and Maintenance

Local pump-station monitoring functions are handled by the unattended workstation at the site. This structure helps maintain local monitoring capability even if the transmission network is interrupted, while remote monitoring and centralized management resume when connectivity is available.

The local platform can also connect a range of alarm devices, including door contacts, infrared detectors, smoke detectors and water-leak sensors, together with environmental monitoring devices for temperature, humidity and related conditions.

Operational Value

  • Reduce the need for continuous on-site staffing at remote pump stations.
  • Improve centralized visibility into pump operation, site security and power / environmental conditions.
  • Bring video, alarms, access control and pump automation into one coordinated monitoring environment.
  • Support faster incident assessment through alarm notifications, video and voice intercom.
  • Enable remote pump start / stop and operating-mode changes where the project configuration requires them.
  • Support historical review through centralized storage and searchable monitoring, alarm and operation records.
